windshield time

28 July 2011 No Comment

This past week I had a lot of time behind the windshield.  Not stoked about it but it gave me a lot of time to think and like a long ride sorted me out.  Traveling can suck but I sure like to go places.  Tuesday, I left Boulder and headed for home just in time to pick up Mike at LAX and get out to Moniques parents for the Angeles Crest 100 this last weekend.  As much as time was standing still and moving faster than ever at the same time(can that happen?) while I was in Boulder it felt like it all fell back into place quickly as soon as I was back home.

Monique and I have been keen on ultra running for a long time and only dipped into it here and there with some glances.  Years ago, I even printed out all of the Angels Crest maps for some training runs.  Maybe we will start putting them to use next year?  We were super stoked to support Mike and get to see a few other friends out there racing…all day…and all night long.  I posted some pics over here.  Probably not the best taper but getting to run some miles with Mike and see just how gnarly and what these 100 mile foot races in the mountains are all about did wonders for my mental approach to racing an Ironman this weekend.

planning to go out hard and hang on!

6 hours of running and only 21.5 more to go!

By the time we got back home on Monday I had a one day to unpack from Boulder and the weekend and load up for a drive to Santa Rosa for our Vineman races this weekend.  This time I was not just singing to myself in the car.  Monique, Jenny and Art are all racing and we made it to Gary’s place last night before we got some sleep.    Art is doing the Aquabike (2.4mi swim, 112mi bike) and the girls are doing the Barbs race while I am doing the full distance sprint ironman (2.4mi swim, 112mi bike, rip your legs off marathon).  We got out to drive the bike course today and log some more time behind the windshield.

Wine country is pretty rad and we are all feeling pretty relaxed tonight (tired) and stoked because tomorrow there is no driving and Saturday we get to RACE!  Best of luck to the people out racing Ultraman Canada this weekend!  If you are out at Vineman drop me a note and hope we can meet up.
