March – Peaking for Patagonia

After a solid start in January and sorting things out in February, I started to reach a peak in March.  The Endurance Corner camp started at the end of February and Max and I got to spend some quality time on the road out to Scottsdale again to see Trevor and start our fatigue early before we got to Arizona for the camp.

My running was better than ever at this point and the camp was built around cycling so I started to fill in the consistency in riding …

TER Report: Days 3 & 4 – The Negative Split

After two days the obvious physical fatigue was starting to set in on all the teams.  We were almost at the halfway point but we knew better to think it was going to get any easier.   Mentally, this was the day to break the competitors.  It started a shift in ratio to the muscle and battle between the ears.  The race was staged so that the first two days on foot were slow and strength orientated.  Just the sort of stuff to tire you out.  Most of the time …

February – life in the desert

I spent a lot of time in the desert this February and while some of it was planned there were many unique experiences that were not planned(adventure) but the end result was the same…and simple.  I spent a lot of time wandering in the wilderness this month.  I could not help but reflect about how life in the desert can change your perspective, allow you time to unwind some thoughts and get a lot of work done.  The desert in the winter is a great place to do work and …

tantauco exploration

I have been pretty excited about something and tried to keep it under wraps until I knew for sure it was going to happen but it looks like my unpaid time off from work has been approved and our flights are being booked.  I am a bit over the top excited at this point about going into the wild and racing for days in one of the most amazing places on this planet.  Next month, I may get to take dream crushing to an international level as I get to …

January – Frequency First

Although I had a list of my major goals for 2011, I also wanted to keep track of my big picture training and lessons learned in a monthly post.  I have an issue getting busy with work, workouts and life stuff without blogging it out but I think I can stick to a good monthly post and it should provide some good perspective looking back.  It also became clear with a test that I took this month for work that I like to do work, learn from it and hopefully …

Tough Times at the Temecula Twelve Hour

This last weekend I was able to jump into the 12 hour mountain bike race in Temecula and join some friends for some hot laps in the dirt.  Looking at my results I would think I had an expected outcome as far as the amount of laps I got in but just getting through this race was one of the most difficult experiences for me.  It felt like I had to gut-it-out during every minute of the race and it is just starting to become clear in my head why …

turning the page

2010 was a big year for me in many ways and it is just starting to sink in how special of a year it was for me.  While it was a lot more than what I was originally after in the way of sport (crushing my dreams became a reality again and again…) it was also one of the most balanced years of my life across all areas of my life.   The way that a lot of “things” just fell together felt like magic.  I have a huge number of …

Ultraman Race Report: Day 3

Each day at Ultraman felt like a huge success and the excitement was  continuing to build.  We were able to meet and get to know everyone more each day and there was a momentum from the previous days success. Finishing with a double marathon on the last day with some fatigue in the body and mind was as much an act of burning away anything we had left in us as it was the start of a celebration.  Our 320 mile journey around the island was almost complete. …

Ultraman Race Report: Day 2

Starting day two I felt much better than expected.  All the extra little steps we took after day one paid off in how I would feel for the long ride on day two.  The story of Humpty Dumpty is not that he fell off of the wall but that all of the kings horses and all of the kings men could not put him back together again.  Recovery and getting back together again for the next day would be a huge part …

Ultraman Race Report: Day 1

Day One – 6.2Mile/10K swim and 90 Mile/145K Ride
Heading into this race, as I mentioned before, I was set on trying to race it.  The distances were new to me but the effort was not.  I had been spent most of my year training life@steady and after completing events that were ranging from from two hours and under to over 24 hour+ races this year I felt most comfortable pushing after the four, five and six hour marks.  I guess it must take me a while to get warmed up. …
